One of the Navy's newest ships, the destroyer USS Gravely, was commissioned into the fleet in Wilmington in the fall of 2010. According to Wikipedia, the vessel is an Arleigh-Burke class guided missile destroyer, the 57th one in the class.
Laid down 26 Nov 2007, launched 30 March 2009 and christened 16 May 2009. It is named for Vice Admiral Samuel lee Gravely (June 4, 1922- October 22, 2004) the Navy's first black man to hold that position. His was a huge impact on the service. He was the first black to be commissioned an officer, first to serve aboard a fighting ship as an officer, the first fleet commander and the first admiral. He served during World War Ii, the Korean War and Vietnam..
His wife, Alma, christened it.

Destroyer USS Gravely (DDG-107) Commissioned at Port of Wilmington, NC

The Gravely arrived at Wilmington November 12th and was commissioned Nov. 20th.
It is named after Vice Admiral Samuel Lee Gravely, Jr. (1922-2004), the first black to achieve the rank of Flag Officer in the Navy and to command a major warship and a fleet.
Some 6,000 attended the commissioning. The ship was built and christened in Pascagoula, Mississippi, is 510 feet long and has a crew of 276.
It is the 57th ship of the Arleigh Burke class of destroyers.
destroyers came about after the Chilean Civil War of 1891 and the Sino-Japanese War of 1894, when small torpedo boats could dart up to large warships, launch a torpedo and dart away.
The torpedo boat destroyer was developed as a counter weapon and the name later shortened to destroyer.
The Gravely is armed with missiles, torpedoes and one lone gin.

Good old Wikipedia said the USS Gravely is DDG-107 and is an Arleigh Burke class guided missile destroyer (the Wilmington Star-News said it is an Aegis-class guided missile destroyer) and the 57th of its class.

USS Gravely to Be Commissioned in Wilmington, NC

The commissioning of the Navy's newest guided missile destroyer will be November 20th in Wilmington.
The Aegis-class vessel was built by Northrop Grumman in Mississippi and is 510 feet long and weighs 9,500 tons.
It was christened May 2009 and named after the late Vice Admiral Samuel Lee Gravely, the Navy's first black admiral. It is undergoing sea trials right now.
This will be the second Navy vessel commissioned recently on the Cape Fear River. In 2008, the nuclear attack submarine USS North Carolina was commissioned amid high security.
Of course, Wilmington is also the home port of the battleship USS North Carolina.
I've never been to a commissioning.
