The HMS Bounty was to have been a tourist attraction at Galveston's waterfront at Pier 21 for the winter.
It was used in the second and third "Pirates of the Caribbean" movies.

The encounter resulted in the death of the captain, a crew member and loss of the ship. Captain Robin Walbridge chose to ride the storm out instead of keeping it docked at New London, Ct., where it would have sustained major damage but no life loss.
The captain's risky decision surprised the ship's owner Robert Hansen who was trying to sell it for $4,6 million.
Robert Walbridge had been the Bounty's captain for 17 years. The search for his body has been called off. That was sure a sad picture of the shipwreck.
I was lucky enough to get to see the ship when it was at Kenosha, Wisconsin.

Hope for Bounty's Captain, Dead Crew Woman Back in 2012
By October 30, 2012, five days after the HMS Bounty movie ship of 1960 sank in Hurricane Sandy off Cape Hatteras, N.C., , the Coast Guard was still looking for the ship's captain, Robin Walbridge, 63, of St. Petersburg, Florida.
However, he died as well.
One woman crew member died. The other 16 survived.

The latest HMS Bounty was built for the 1960 MGM's "Mutiny on the Bounty" movie with Marlon Brando and has been in several movies since then and dozens of TV shows. The studio commissioned the ship from Smith and Ruhland in Lunenburg, Nova Scotia. It was built in the same way that a ship would have been 200 years ago and constructed from the ship's original drawings.
After the movie's filming, it was berthed in St. Petersburg, Florida, where it remained until the mid 1980s. In 1986, Ted Turner bought the MGM film library and the Bounty. The ship was used to film "Treasure Island" with Charlton Heston in 1989.
In 1993, the Bounty was donated to the Fall River Foundation. In 2001 it was purchased by the HMS Bounty Organization and it was in need of major repairs which were done.
The Bounty sank and was a total loss on 25 October 2012 Hurricane Sandy.

HMS Bounty Sinking Inquiry: Rot Found

The HMS Bounty sank last year off Cape Hatteras, NC, in Superstorm Sandy. The Coast Guard and National Transportation Safety Board is holding a hearing to determine why. The ship had been built for the 1962 movie "Mutiny of the Bounty."

Shortly before the ship sailed on its final voyage, the captain had been told of rooted and decaying hull frames. Todd Kosakowski of a Maine shipyard had told Captain Robin Walbridge he had found rot before it sank. Rather than replace the rotted timbers, the captain had his crew paint over it.
One crewmember died and the captain's body was never found after the ship sank.
Eight days of hearings will be held.

Tall Ship HMS Bounty Sinks in Hurricane/Superstorm Sandy-- Part 1

I was very sad to hear that this ship, built to the exact specifications of the original, sank yesterday off Wilmington, NC, when it was unable to navigate through the 40-foot waves of Hurricane Sandy, took on water and went down.
It had a crew of 16. Fourteen were rescued yesterday by Coast Guard helicopters. The last one off the ship, the captain is still missing. One other man was rescued, but died later.
The vessel was constructed specifically for the 1962 movie "Mutiny On the Bounty" starring Marlon Brando. It had been in New London, Ct., for a gathering of the crew of the submarine USS Mississippi on Oct. 25th after a month of repairs of Maine and was on its way to its home port in St. Petersburg, Florida.It went down 100 miles off Cape Hatteras in what is known as the Graveyard of the Atlantic for the number of ships that sank there.
The 412 ton ship has three masts, the tallest at 115 feet and ten miles of rigging.
The crew member who was found, but later died was 42-year-old Claudene Christian (and I'm thinking when I first read it, that his last name was the same as the leader of the mutineers. But that name sounded a bit more like that of a female.) and he reportedly is a descendant. Later, I found out that Claudene Christian was female. Her ancestor has been played by four of Hollywood's leading men: Errol Flynn, Clark Gable, Marlon Brando and Mel Gibson.
