NIU's 125th Anniversary (1904-1918)-- Part 2: Homecoming and WW I
As NIU commemorates its 125th anniversary.
1904-- First overseas students arrive.
1906-- Athletic Association adopts cardinal and black as the official colors.
1906-- The tern "Home-Coming" first appears in the campus newspaper.
1907-- Illinois General Assembly votes to allow normal schools to confer bachelor degrees.
1907-- The East Lagoon is created.
1915-- First black student graduates. Fanny Ruth Patterson.
1915-- Williston Hall opens as the first residence for women.
1917-1918-- World War I puts its stamp on NISNS.

Looking Back 51 Years Ago, 1965: NIU Homecoming and Vietnam War Protest
From the November 3, 2015, MidWeek (DeKalb County, Illinois) "Looking Back"
1965, 50 years ago.
"NIU's 1965 Homecoming is set for November 6. In addition, new structures will be dedicated, a Legislative Day Luncheon, a celebration of the Golden Anniversary of Williston Hall which is the first residence hall built on campus.
** Demonstrators from NIU opposed to the Vietnam War didn't make much of a show Saturday in DeKalb. Approximately 25 boys and girls gathered at the University Center and paraded down Lincoln Highway to Fourth Street, south to Franklin then west to Huntley Park.
"Carrying placards opposing the fighting, the group sat on the grass and listened to a number of speakers."
These protests certainly increased toward the end of the decade.

Getting My Fright On
Of course, I'm planning on seeing the "Carrie" remake movie in the next couple weeks. They still haven't learned not to "Mess" with her.
Yesterday, I went to Wal-Mart in DeKalb, Illinois, (we were there for NIU Homecoming) and bought four scary movies (well, two were comedies with potentially scary monsters). I bought "Men in Black" and "Men in Black II" on the same DVD as well as "Poltergeist" and "Alien."
When that huge skull popped out of that closet with mouth agape in "Poltergeist"...well, that "skeered" me a lot. Then, where was the alien? And, of course, its birth sequence.
